When Stomach Contents Move Where They Shouldn’t

Heartburn is a burning sensation behind the breastbone that can creep upward toward the throat. It happens when stomach contents move back up into the esophagus, which is also called acid reflux. When reflux becomes frequent or ongoing, it may be diagnosed as gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.

Sometimes the trigger is easy to spot, like a big meal or eating late and heading straight to bed. Other times, it’s not nearly as obvious.

The Everyday Triggers Behind an Uncomfortable Pattern

Heartburn can be influenced by a mix of habits, timing, and individual triggers. These include:

  • Large meals or eating close to bedtime
  • Certain foods, such as spicy or high-fat dishes, tomatoes, citrus, chocolate, caffeine, mint, or alcohol
  • Pregnancy, when heartburn can become an unwelcome part of an already changing routine
  • Lying down or curling up on the couch soon after eating

What bothers one person may not bother another, which is why noticing your own patterns can be more useful than automatically cutting out a long list of foods.

Recognizing Reflux and Knowing When to Get It Checked

Some people notice burning after meals, a sour taste, food or liquid coming back up, or symptoms that worsen when lying down. Others notice coughing, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing.

Occasional heartburn is common. If it’s happening frequently, waking you at night, requiring medication regularly, or getting worse, talk with your medical provider. Difficulty or pain with swallowing, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, blood in vomit, or black or bloody stools also need medical evaluation.

New or unexplained chest pain should not automatically be chalked up to reflux. Pressure or squeezing accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, lightheadedness, or discomfort into the arm, back, neck, or jaw should be treated as a medical emergency.

Looking at the Bigger Picture, Not Just the Symptom

When heartburn or digestive discomfort comes up during a visit, we start by asking questions. When does it happen? What makes it better or worse? Have you discussed it with your medical provider?

We aren’t trying to diagnose GERD from the chiropractic table. The esophagus and stomach receive input from the autonomic nervous system, including the vagus nerve and pathways associated with the thoracic spinal cord. That connection is one reason we pay attention to the spine and nervous system during an evaluation.

Chiropractic care is not a replacement for medical evaluation or treatment when GERD is persistent or severe, but it may be one part of a person’s overall care.

Support That Works Alongside Your Care

Some patients under care at McCann Chiropractic have told us they noticed less frequent heartburn, fewer nighttime symptoms, or that they weren’t reaching for antacids as often. Those are individual experiences, not a promise of what chiropractic care will do for someone else, and we can’t assume an adjustment caused the change.

We would also never suggest stopping or changing medication without talking to the healthcare provider managing it. If chiropractic care is appropriate, we address the chiropractic and musculoskeletal concerns we find and involve other providers when something falls outside our scope.

Small Changes That May Help You Spot a Pattern

You don’t necessarily need to eliminate half the foods in your kitchen. Heartburn triggers vary, so start by noticing what consistently seems to set yours off.

Leaving two to three hours between dinner and lying down, staying upright after meals, and paying attention to portion size may help. If nighttime reflux is a pattern, elevating the head of the bed or using an appropriate wedge may help some people.

A simple note about what you ate and when symptoms happened can also make patterns easier to spot. Most importantly, don’t become afraid of food or chase every online list of “good” and “bad” foods. Start with what you are actually noticing in your own body.
